About the event
To support the exhibition Marijke van Schaardenburg is hosting a discussion panal on 'Queer Space' featuring Ellia Lim from Toi o Tamaki Auckland Art Gallery, Barbara Holloway of City Centre Activations and Sarah Buxton from the Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatapui-Wahine o Aotearoa.
‘We Make The Space Work’ is Marijke van Schaardenburg’s first solo exhibition culminating years of producing sapphic queer work and publishing zines. The exhibition features mixed media artworks, installed objects and an accompanying zine.
The exhibition works are boldly queer, reflecting on the intimacy of queer relationships, and discussing how we as queer people navigate and make the spaces around us ‘work’ when our identities often fall outside of the framework of society's expectations.
On the upper level above the exhibition is a small community space with a ‘community table’ selling queer zines and prints, as well as a reading area with a selection of queer zines, graphic novels and books.
