![🌈 Ngā mihi o te rā – Happy International Lesbian Day! Rā wāhine takatāpui o te ao
Today on October 8th we celebrate ngā wāhine aroha wāhine – women who love women – and acknowledge their strength, stories, and mana. 🏳️🌈💜
At The Charlotte Museum, we protect and share the hītori (history) of lesbian sapphic communities in Aotearoa. We honour the wāhine takatāpui who paved the way and continue to inspire.

This poster comes from Lesbian Liberation Week, organised out of Aotearoa’s first Lesbian Centre, opened in Boulcott Street in 1979.
From protest marches to campaigns for visibility and rights, including a battle with Wellington City Council over bus ads 🚌✊ and pushing for inclusion in the Human Rights Commission Act, this was a powerful era of lesbian activism and resistance.
